“Happiness is a journey, not a destination”.

Nothing has taught me this more than life on the road. It has taught us to slow down, it has given us perspective in ways I never would have imagined, and it has given us an incredible sense of freedom.
My husband and I live in a 1972 classic Kombi camper van called Scout, and we plan to spend the next year or two slowly exploring Australia.

The man who sold us our van did so on one condition, he made us promise him we would have adventures.

He had owned the van since 1972, when he and his wife purchased it in Germany before travelling all over Europe. They then moved back to South Africa and brought her with them, and when they moved to Australia before starting a family, Scout came too. She’s lived a pretty incredible life so far, and has been well loved, but she definitely has plenty of adventure left in her.

As we started doing small trips in our van two things happened. Firstly, life became incredibly simple on the road. We realised just how little we needed, and it wasn’t long before we were getting rid of as much as we possibly could, putting the rest into storage and moving into the van full time. Secondly, we totally fell in love with this beautiful country we live in in a whole new way. I knew we lived in a big, beautiful, diverse country, but I have been constantly blown away. Even today I had an experience that I didn’t know was possible - little wild kangaroos hanging out and cuddling up with us on the most beautiful turquoise beach (so amazing!).

We don’t have a lot of space in the van, and while many people thought packing for a year or more on the road would be hard, it was actually easy. I just picked beautiful, simple, pieces I can wear every day, with a few statement prints and easy-wearing flowy dresses. I like to dress the way I like to live - happy and free.

What I’ve found to be true is that happiness is a choice. We make choices that lead to living happier, more fulfilling lives. Happiness doesn’t just come find us. And we won’t find it at the end of that next ‘goal’. It’s learning to live in the present moment, and appreciate the journey every day. This can be as simple as making the choice to fill a little bit of time each day with something that fills you with a little bit of joy.
